AUSTIN -- After two rounds at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, the BYU men's golf team sits in 10th place, just one stroke behind No. 19 Louisville and seven strokes ahead of No. 47 TCU. Sophomore Robbie Fillmore led the Cougars in both rounds and currently sits tied for sixth place at 1-over-par.
"Today's tournament was fun and built confidence for us," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. "It was exciting to see Robbie at the lead."
Fillmore's phenomenal first round catapulted him ahead of the competition. He hit solid shots on 14 holes and birdied four others--one on the front nine and three on the back. After the first round, Fillmore sat in first place at 4-under-par. In the second round, Fillmore missed a couple of short shots, causing him to finish the day in sixth place.
Freshman Esteban Calisto shot a solid 1-over-par 72 in the first round, but struggled to make good shots in round two. He finished the day tied for 34th place, with teammate Brady Johnson.
"Unfortunately we lost shots in the second round," Brockbank said. "We didn't capitalize on hitting good shots into the green."
The Morris Williams Intercollegiate is a 15-team, two-day tournament featuring several of the nation's top teams, including No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 14 Auburn. It is being held at the par-71 University of Texas Golf Club, where tournament tees are set at 7,412 yards.
The final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday, with tee times beginning in the morning. The Cougars will next be in action at the Ping Cougar Classic on April 18 and 19.
