Dominance of the Mountain West Conference 10th Anniversity All-Decade cross country teams is reflective of BYU's national status.
Three NCAA women's cross country titles came by virtue of BYU getting six of the seven spots on the recently named MWC women's team. And BYU's Josh Rohatinsky is the only national champion (2006) for the conference on the harrier teams.
Rohatinsky's sister, Tara Rohatinsky-Northcutt, was on BYU's 2001 NCAA Championship Team. Laura Heiner-Turner was on the 1999 and 2002 NCAA title teams. Kassi Andersen, Michaela Mannova and Breanne Sandberg were on the 2001 and 2002 NCAA title teams.
"Kassi had an immediate impact on our team and has a great legacy at BYU," said BYU coach Patrick Shane. "Laura was a phenomenal, the best of the three sisters and one of my best athletes ever. We couldn't have won our conference or national titles without Michaela."
In addition to those five, BYU was represented by Heidi Magill-Dahl on the MWC All-Decade team.
Joining Josh Rohatinsky for the BYU men on the seven-member MWC All-Decade team were Kip Kangogo and Chandler Goodwin. Kangogo transferred to TCU after two years with the Cougars and Goodwin just finished his eligibility this past season.
"Josh was highly recruited and helped kick off my coaching career," said BYU coach Ed Eyestone, who also won the NCAA individual title in 1984. "Chandler was a tenacious, feisty competitor."
Since the MWC began in 1999, BYU's women won the league crown eight years in a row until last season. BYU's men won the MWC title seven times during that span.
The MWC All-Decade teams were selected by a combined panel of media, institutional and conference personnel and on-line fan poll. In order to be eligible for consideration, candidates must have been a first team all-Mountain West selection at least once in their careers.
