ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Sept. 26, 2008) – The BYU men’s golf team is competing strong at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by the University of New Mexico, finishing Round 1 at +11 299 and tied at No. 7 out of 16 teams.
The Cougars got off to a great start and after 14 holes were in a tie for 3rd place at even-par. However, the final four holes proved to be the most difficult as the team combined to go 11-over-par.
“We’re playing on a very difficult course with fast greens and we were doing well but fell off a little bit,” said head coach Bruce Brockbank. “We’ve got to find a way to capitalize and hang in there.”
The team is playing 36 holes today with Round 3 being played Saturday morning. Early in the second round, junior Robbie Fillmore was tied at No. 24 after finishing Rd. 1 at +1 73. He birdied holes 5 and 6 on the front nine and scored a Trophy Ball on the back nine – making all holes at par or birdie.
Fellow junior Brady Johnson was tied at No. 31 at +2 74 after the first round. His positives notes from Rd. 1 included making birdies on holes 7, 9, 10 and 18.
Esteban Calisto, a sophomore out of Quito, Ecuador, shot +3 75 after 18 holes and senior Nick Killpack and transfer Sterling Clark were tied at No. 52 early in the second round.
Freshmen Stephen Archibald and Jordan Rodgers are golfing independently for practice and experience and finished Rd. 1 at even-par and –1 71, respectively.
“There’s still a lot of golf to play,” Brockbank said. “There’s a lot of good things going on, we’ve just got to continue playing and capitalize on those opportunities to make big shots.”
Host New Mexico was leading the field at -13 while fellow Mountain West school UNLV was in second at -10.
