BREMERTON -- The BYU men’s golf team began their second tournament of the season at the Washington Husky Invitational just two days after completing the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in New Mexico on Saturday.
A little fatigue was apparent as the team got off to a slow start in both rounds one and two to finish at +26 and tied for eighth place in the 11-team field.
“The course got the best of us today,” said head coach Bruce Brockbank. “This is once again a very difficult course and we were up and down all the way through. We’re all kind of disappointed, but we’re trying to get better and working hard.”
Junior Robbie Fillmore is leading the Cougars at +2 and is currently is a tie at No. 11. He finished Rd. 1 at -2 70 but shot a +4 76 in the second round.
“We’re trying our best, but not clicking on all cylinders,” Fillmore said. “We’ve got to get better at finishing the holes and making the big shots.”
University of Washington transfer Sterling Clark made a homecoming of sorts as he is sitting at +5 and in a tie for the No. 22 spot.
Brady Johnson, Nick Killpack and Esteban Calisto are battling through the tough Gold Mountain Golf Course to finish out the starting lineup for the team.
Freshmen Jordan Rodgers and Stephen Archibald are playing well for the Cougars golfing independently as Rodgers is +3 and tied for 14th.
“We’re still in contention to move up a few spots,” Brockbank said. “We just need to play more solid and consistent golf.”
