STOCKTON -- Another strong round of golf at the Pacific Invitational has allowed the BYU men’s golf team to put itself in a position for a possible tournament victory.
The Cougars, just seven strokes behind leader Rice (-2) and two strokes behind Oregon and Fresno State (+3), find themselves in fifth place at five-over-par.
Junior Robbie Fillmore made a surge to become the leading Cougar at one-under overall after he shot a one-under 70 in round two. He is currently tied for 8th place after being tied at 16th after the first round. He made an Eagle on par-4 Hole 6 and made two birdies and three bogeys on the day.
Nick Killpack, who had an incredible first round, continued to play well as he currently sits tied for the No. 13 spot at one-over after shooting a +2 73 Tuesday. He was tied for 6th after the first round, but struggled on par-5 Hole 16 in the second round by shooting three-over on the hole. He made four birdies on the day.
Brady Johnson proved his consistency by going two-over on the day to land at the No. 17 spot at two-over-par. He made two birdies and four bogeys on the day.
Freshman Jordan Rodgers and sophomore Esteban Calisto continue to battle for the team, as Rodgers sits at the No, 20 spot at +3, while Calisto is at No. 49 at nine-over. Rodgers managed one birdie, but Calisto suffered seven bogeys and had a six-over-par round two.
Oregon’s Sean Maekawa made a hole-in-one on Hole 13. Pacific’s TJ Bordeaux is in first place at five-under-par.
“We’ve put ourselves in a good position to possibly win this,” said assistant coach Todd Miller. “Everyone contributed and played well and just hung in there.”
