OKLAHOMA City, Okla. (Feb. 7, 2008)—The Amateur Softball Association of America and USA Softball announced Friday that BYU softball head coach Gordon Eakin is one of 14 coaches selected to the 2009 Women’s National team coaching pool.

“It’s a prestigious honor to be considered with the potential to represent our country at that level,” Eakin said. “I take that responsibility seriously and I am excited to do whatever I can to support the Women’s National team. It is also an honor for BYU softball to be represented at that level.”

The coaches have been selected for the 2009-2012 quadrennium and are responsible for the training and preparation of the Women’s National team program. The final head coach selection will be announced at a later date.

Eakin is entering his seventh season at the helm of the BYU softball program. With a 248-112 record, he has led BYU to four-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. With Eakin coaching, the Cougars have posted great offensive numbers ranking fourth in the nation for batting average carrying a .325 in 2008. The team ranked fifth for both home runs per game and slugging percentage. Eakin joined the team during its inception in 2000 when he worked as an assistant before taking over head coaching duties in 2008.

Under Eakin’s direction, the Cougars are currently in St. George, Utah, at the Red Desert Classic. BYU remains on the road until March 27 when they take on Boise State at 5 p.m.
