TOLEDO -- A four-and-a-half-hour rain delay Wednesday afternoon cut short BYU junior Brady Johnson’s second-round surge to come back in contention at the NCAA D-I Men’s Golf Championships at the par-71 Inverness Country Club.
Johnson was scheduled to tee off at approximately 12:05 p.m. (MST) but wasn’t able to do so until 4:30 p.m., after which he was able to complete nine holes at 1-over-par to finish the day at 8-over-par halfway through round two.
With his effort, he moved into a 17-way tie for 85th place after finishing the first round tied for 119th overall at 7-over-par. He made three birdies on the day to go along with three pars. One of the birdies occurred on hole eight, which he had double-bogeyed in Tuesday’s opening round.
“He played a solid nine holes today,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “He played well despite the weather conditions and battling a small case of food poisoning. He got in some pretty good shots and he’s staying in there and just trying to have fun.”
Those who did not complete the second round will begin play Thursday morning at approximately 4:45 a.m. MT, after which the third and final round of stroke play will commence at about 8 a.m. MT pending weather conditions.
The top eight teams will then compete for the national championship Friday and Saturday to conclude the 112th NCAA Men’s Golf Championships. Oklahoma State (E) and Georgia (+5) continue to lead the pack heading into the final round.

“This is a good experience for Brady to play on a championship course with tradition under these conditions and he’s learning a lot,” Brockbank said. “If he can stay in the fairway and get on the green in two shots, he’ll be fine, but that’s not an easy thing to do on an awesome course like this.”
