LAYTON -- Zac Blair, an incoming BYU freshman, recently won the 111th annual Utah State Amateur Championship at the Valley View Golf Course by defeating Weber State’s Alex Sutton in match play, 5 and 3.
The Ogden native and Fremont High product is the son of former BYU All-American Jimmy Blair (1974-77), who won the State Am in 1973 also at the age of 18. Zac advanced to the match play championship by beating Conner Jones and Devon Purser in the opening round, future BYU teammate Robbie Fillmore in the quarterfinals and Todd Francis in the semifinals.
Blair beat Fillmore 2 and 1 following a 9-birdie effort in the July 10 quarterfinals. Fillmore was a co-medalist of the stroke play portion of the tournament after tying for first place on July 9. Blair entered match play as the No. 7 seed after rounds of 72 and 69 in stroke play.
Blair led Fremont to two state championships and was named All-State all four years of his high school career. He was named a 2008 Honorable Mention All-American and tied for 17th place at the 2008 Polo Jr. Classic. He also came in second at the Golf Pride Jr. Classic and tied for No. 22 at the 2008 Footjoy Invitational.
