PROVO, Utah – BYU coach Dave Rose announced today that Hunter Erickson of Provo, Utah, and Trevin Knell of Woods Cross, Utah, have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Cougars.
A guard out of Timpview High School, Erickson averaged 22.0 points per game while hitting 57 3-point field goals as a junior in 2016-17. He led the T-Birds to a record of 18-6 overall and 12-2 in Region 7 play. He posted season highs of 34 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and six 3-point field goals.
“Hunter is a tough, skilled and athletic guard,” Rose said. “We love his competitive nature and are so excited to have the opportunity to have him join our program.”
Following the 2016-17 season, Erickson was named first-team all-state by the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune. The Daily Herald tabbed Erickson as the All-Valley Offensive Player of the Year.
Erickson also received offers from Utah, Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara.
Following his senior year of high school, Erickson is planning to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will be a freshman for the Cougars in 2020-21.
Knell, a 6-foot-5 guard who prepped at Woods Cross High School, was named first-team all-state by the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune in 2016 and 2017. As a senior in 2016-17, Knell averaged 25.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 steals per game while leading Woods Cross to a record of 22-3 overall and 12-0 in Region 5 play.
“Trevin is an elite shooter that loves to be in the gym,” Rose said. “We love his ability to spread the floor and shoot the ball and look forward to having him with us when he returns from his mission.”
During his junior season, Knell averaged 21.2 points while helping the Wildcats reach the 4A semifinals and finish with a 19-5 overall record, including 10-2 in region play.
The state of Utah’s No. 2 recruit in the class of 2017 according to ESPN.com, Knell finished his high school career with 1,495 points and 225 3-point field goals. He posted career highs of 37 points, 16 rebounds and six 3-pointers.
In the fall of 2016, Knell signed with California but asked for and received a release from the Golden Bears following a coaching change in Berkeley. Knell also received offers from Air Force, Montana, Rice, Robert Morris, San Diego, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley, Washington State, Weber State and Wyoming.
Knell began serving a mission for The Church of Jesus in Uruguay in July of this year. He will enroll at BYU in the fall of 2019.
Erickson and Knell both played for Exum Elite Utah Prospects during the AAU season.
