PROVO, Utah — Senior Madie Siddoway Gates scored two goals and tallied an assist, leading Blue to a 3-0 win over White in the annual Blue and White scrimmage at South Field Saturday night.
"We are really pleased with how things went tonight," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "The girls have been training hard. Sometimes you get to the Blue and White game after three days of double days and you hope they have something left. We are integrating in some new players and our freshmen and new players have done really well."
In the 34th minute, Elise Flake connected with Mikayla Colohan, who crossed the ball to a wide-open Gates, extending Blue's lead to 2-0 going into halftime.
Despite many roster changes at halftime and a lightning delay just minutes into the second half, Blue continued to control the ball in the attacking third. Gates gave Blue the final goal of the scrimmage in the 58th minute after controlling the ball just outside of the 18-yard box and placing a long shot past the goalkeeper to extend Blue's advantage to 3-0.
All three keepers saw time in goal and were led by sophomore Cassidy Smith's seven saves. Blue outshot White 17 to 12 in the 80 minutes of play.
The Cougars travel to UCLA for their second exhibition game of the season on Aug. 10. In 2017, BYU fell 1-0 to the then ranked No. 1 Bruins at South Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. PDT and will be played at Drake Field.
