PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida | MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada — BYU men’s golf alum Mike Weir was named captain of the International Team for the 2024 Presidents Cup by Presidents Cup and PGA TOUR officials on Wednesday.
“Mike is one of those guys that everyone admires and respects,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “He has been so supportive to our program over the years and always makes time to mentor our guys, both individually and as a team. He has been a great ambassador for BYU, and I look forward to cheering him on as the captain of the International Team in 2024.”
With his appointment as the 2024 international captain, Weir becomes the first BYU alum to captain a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup team. Weir has appeared in five Presidents Cup events as a player (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009) and three times as an assistant captain (2017, 2019, 2022). In 2000, the eight-time PGA TOUR winner became the first Canadian born player to tee it up for the International Team on the Presidents Cup stage.
“Presidents Cup has become such a big part of my career, so to be here in this moment announced as captain of the 2024 International Team is surreal,” said Weir. “When I look back, I have so many incredible memories associated with this event whether it be my debut in 2000; winning my Singles match against Tiger in 2007 at Royal Montreal; witnessing Ernie create the shield in 2019; and then seeing Trevor carry that momentum in 2022. Now as I look with anticipation toward 2024, I couldn’t be more excited to lead the International Team into my home country of Canada for what will surely be the experience of a lifetime.”
The 2003 Master’s champion holds a 13-9-2 all-time record at the Presidents Cup and is one of only six international players to capture 10 or more wins in competition.
The highlight of Weir’s Presidents Cup career came when the event graced Canadian soil for the first time in 2007. The Sarnia, Ontario native earned a 3-1-1 record at the Royal Montreal Golf Club, which included taking down then World No. 1 Tiger Woods 1-up in singles.
The Presidents Cup will return to Weir’s homeland in 2024 where he will attempt to lead the international team to its second Presidents Cup victory. The Royal Montreal Golf Club will play host to the Presidents Cup for the second time in the event’s history, Sept. 24-29, 2024.
