Multiple Cougars Set Top-10s and Personal Bests On Day One Of December Invite

Day one of the Cougars' home meet was highlighted by two top-10 BYU all-time indoor performances from Rebekah Erikson and Mayci Taylor alongside a career-best outing by Danny Bryant.

PROVO, Utah — BYU men's and women's track and field saw standout performances on day one of competion at the BYU December Invite on Friday afternoon at the Smith Fieldhouse.

The Cougars were led by top-10 indoor outings from Rebekah Erikson, Mayci Taylor and a personal best from Danny Bryant.

"I feel like my athletes did tremendously well," said men's and women's multis and jumps coach Tiffany Hogan. "Sometimes going into the first meet, I try not to set expectations. But even though I didn't really have expectations, they exceeded them with multiple athletes achieving personal bests."

Erikson achieved the No. 2 spot on the program's all-time indoor top-10 boards, vaulting a personal best 4.33-meters/14-2.5. The junior's previous best was 4.21m/13-9.75. 

"I feel like it just turned out really well today," Erikson said. "It's been a little bit of a tougher training cycle this fall with changes in coaching and adapting to a new workout style, but I felt like I was able to do that. I feel like it just turned out really well today."

Taylor won the pentathlon with the program's eighth-best all-time pentathlon score at 3896. The sophomore opens the seaon with the current third-best score nationlly. Taylor's previous-best was 3654. 

 "Honestly, it was a perfect start for my first meet," said pentathlete Mayci Taylor. "I definitley think there is more in the tank. The amount of offseason work that I have put into this makes me emotional. I'm so happy and I know there are even better things to come."

Bryant placed first overall in both the men's shot put and weight throw, recording personal bests in each event. Bryant tossed for 18.37m/60-3.25 in the shot put, as another personal best throwing for 18.76m/61-6.5 in the men's weight throw.

"I was pretty happy with how I performed," Bryant said. "This season I finally feel healthy, especially since I was injured last year and had surgery two seasons ago. It was definitely a lot better than my last season opener, which is a good sign of things to come."
