BYU leaves Bedford Cup with multiple victories

The ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains concluded, with BYU women's tennis securing multiple victories over the weekend. Four Cougars competed in the tournament hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy, with Maddy Smith finishing as a finalist in her draw.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  — The ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains concluded, with BYU women's tennis securing multiple victories over the weekend. Four Cougars competed in the tournament hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy, with Maddy Smith finishing as a finalist in her draw.

"I love playing in the Bedford Cup to start off the year," said assistant coach Gabby Curtis. "We quickly see where players have improved during the summer and what areas need improvement this fall. I'm happy with the growth I saw this weekend and am excited for the momentum to continue for these players over the next few months."

In singles, Emmie Moore (0-1) participated in the alpha draw. Maddy Smith (3-0) competed in the bravo draw, while Bitsy Tullis (1-2) was in the Charlie draw, and Avery Pope (0-2) was in the delta draw. Moore and Smith (1-2) partnered for doubles play, as did Pope and Tullis (2-2).

Moore represented BYU in the competition's top singles flight but had to withdraw due to injury. All four Cougars also began their doubles season on Thursday.

  • Maddy Smith (BYU) def. Ida Johansson (U of I), 2-6, 6-3, 6-1
  • Lena Beckx (U of I) def. Bitsy Tullis (BYU), 6-4, 7-6 (7-2)

Round Three

  • Maddy Smith (BYU) def. No. 4 Meg McCarty (MSU), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Consolation C-Quarterfinals-Q

  • Serina Abriola (UW) def. Avery Pope (BYU), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)

Consolation C-Quarterfinals

  • Bente Vandeputte (UNM) def. Bitsy Tullis (BYU), 6-2, 4-6, 10-4

Moore, in her first singles match of the season, unfortunately, was unable to finish due to injury. Smith defeated the No. 2 seed and No. 4 seed in her bracket but had to forfeit in the final match played on Sunday. Tullis picked up her first singles win since returning from her mission and looks to continue her momentum into the rest of the season.

Consolation C-Quarterfinals

  • Buzkova/Weekley (CSU) def. Pope/Tullis (BYU), 6-0

Pope and Tullis had a strong doubles tournament, finishing with two victories. Moore and Smith had one doubles win but had to withdraw in the consolation bracket due to Moore's injury.

The Cougars will return to action next week in San Diego, California, for the USTA Intercollegiate Classic.
