BYU heads to Berkeley for Cal Fall Invitaional

The Cougars are set to head to California for the Cal Fall Invitational this weekend. The Invitational will feature both singles and doubles draws for the athletes attending the event.

BERKELEY, Ca. — The Cougars are set to head to California for the Cal Fall Invitational this weekend. The Invitational will feature both singles and doubles draws for the athletes attending the event. 

BYU will bring its entire roster to the invitational, marking the first time this fall that the team will compete together in a tournament. The Cougars' singles and doubles matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 29-30.

The Cougars

Emilee Astle

The senior captain from Sandy, Utah, returns for her final season after recording eight singles wins and 10 doubles victories last year.

Jacque Dunyon

The junior from Huntsville, Utah, will be competing in her second tournament of the fall, after going 0-2 in singles and 2-0 in doubles last week in San Diego.

Bobo Huang

Huang, the junior captain from Guangzhou, China, will be competing in her first tournament of the fall, following a season with 14 singles victories and 13 doubles victories.

Kendal Kovick

The junior from Henderson, Nevada, recently earned her first singles win with the Cougars in San Diego after transferring from West Virginia. Kovick is 1-2 in singles this fall.

Tina Li

Li, a sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, returns after having a successful freshman campaign, posting 15 singles victories and 11 doubles victories in 2022-23 for BYU.

Avery Pope

The junior from Provo, Utah, will be competing in her second tournament of the fall, after going 2-2 in doubles and 0-2 in singles at the Bedford Cup.

Kaavya Sawhney

Sawhney, a senior from Chandigarh, India, looks to make her BYU debut with the team this weekend after recently transferring from Charlotte.

Maddy Smith

A junior from Henderson, Nevada, Smith will be competing in her second tournament this fall, after going 3-0 in singles and 1-2 in doubles at the Bedford Cup. Smith was also named a 2023 Bedford Cup Bravo draw finalist.

Bitsy Tullis

Tullis, a sophomore from Centerville, Utah, picked up her first singles win and two doubles victories at the Bedford Cup since rejoining the team after recently completing a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Lima, Peru.

Kara Wheatley

The senior from Hong Kong, China, will make her fall debut in Berkeley after recording four singles victories and 12 doubles victories last year.

Coaching Staff

Head coach Holly Hasler is in her sixth season at BYU, entering the year with a 58-46 all-time record with the Cougars.

Assistant coach Gabby Curtis, in her third season with the Cougars, played collegiately at USC, amassing 72 career singles wins and 73 career doubles victories during her time with the Trojans from 2015-2017.
