BOISE, Idaho – BYU men’s tennis opened their fall season at the Dar Walters Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Eight players from BYU competed and as the Cougars recorded nine wins.
"Good to start the season, several players went undefeated in singles and doubles this weekend," Coach Zack Warren said. "It shows the hard work they put in over the summer and their commitment to the team and representing BYU."
The tournament featured two different draws; a blue and an orange draw. Two BYU pairs were in the blue as well as two in the orange. Each round was comprised of a doubles set and two singles matches. To clinch a round a team needed to win two of the three matches.
David Duong and Redd Owen along with Tygen Goldammer and Hardy Owen were placed in the blue draw. TJ Wells and Otto Schreiner with Adam Chodur and Alex Edmonston rounded out the orange draw.
The Cougars all advanced with a win or a bye in the first round on Friday. Duong and R. Owen as well as Wells and Schreiner won in the second round to advance to the semifinals of their respective draws.
The others suffered losses in the second round but still played through the consolation draw. Goldammer and H. Owen lost in the next round of the consolation draw. However, Goldammer was able to stay undefeated in his singles play throughout the tournament.
Edmonston and Chodur won out picking up two wins in the consolation draw. Edmonston was undefeated in his singles matches throughout.
Duong and Owen were knocked out in the third round and competed in the third-place match. After picking up the doubles point Duong was able to clinch the third seed with a win in a third set tiebreak 10-8. Despite Owen having to withdraw from his singles match, the duo claimed third place in the blue draw. Duong had a perfect record in singles and did not drop a match in the two days of play.
Wells and Schreiner won their semifinal and advanced to the finals of the orange draw. Although they won the doubles set in the final, they were unable to secure a singles victory, finishing second in the orange draw. They never dropped a doubles set throughout the weekend.
"We have a busy few weeks ahead with traveling and competing and we're excited to build off of this great first tournament," Warren said.
