Cougars pick up eleven wins at Sherwood Collegiate Cup

Four Cougars competed in both singles and doubles throughout the weekend. They picked up 11 wins, eight in singles play and three as doubles teams.

Thousand Oaks, Calif. – BYU men’s tennis competed at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Friday and Saturday. Four Cougars competed in both singles and doubles throughout the weekend. They picked up 11 wins, eight in singles play and three as doubles teams.

“We continue to build in every match starting last week in Boise and continued this week in Thousand Oaks,” said coach Jonathan Sanchez

The four Cougars that competed were Redd Owen, Adam Chodur, Tygen Goldammer and Hardy Owen. 

Chodur and Redd Owen picked up a doubles win in their first set against the University of California. They were able to couple this with another win later in the day against Pacific. The pair went 2-3 as a doubles team, dropping only one set to SMU.

Goldammer and Hardy Owen dropped their first two doubles sets. Losing to both Cal and Pacific. The duo bounced back in their final set of the weekend, beating SMU and totaling three doubles points for the Cougar pairs.

Chodur and Hardy Owen were both undefeated during the weekend in singles play. The Cougars matched up against Pacific, SMU and LMU in singles. Both Chodur and Hardy Owen went 3-0 in these matches and finished the weekend unbeaten. Redd Owen and Goldammer each picked up one win in their final matches against LMU to bring the singles win total to eight.

“The competition were some of the strongest teams in the country and we went toe to toe with them and got some big wins in singles and doubles,” said Sanchez. “We are looking forward to seeing how Zach (Fuchs) and Wally (Thayne) do at the All-American, and the rest of the guys at the Bedford Cup at the Air-force Academy next week.”

The next tournament for the Cougars will be Fuchs and Thayne playing in the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma from Sept. 21-29. As well as the Bedford Cup at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Sept. 27 and 28 for the rest of the team.
