IRVING, Texas – BYU junior Bobo Huang was named the Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week following impressive victories over Cal Berkeley's Katja Wiersholm, ranked No. 36 nationally, and NC State's Anna Zyryanova, ranked No. 40 in the country this week.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Bobo. She works hard and is a great leader among our team," said head coach Holly Hasler. "It’s rewarding to see her hard work paying off in these tough battles. I have a strong feeling Bobo will secure many more victories throughout this season. She is just getting started!"
After securing 14 singles victories in 2023, Huang continued her success into 2024 with multiple wins over ranked opponents.
Her first triumph of the new year came against Wiersholm. Despite an early setback in the first set (2-6), Huang staged a comeback, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the next two sets.
In her second victory of the week, Huang faced Zyryanova in a thrilling match, emerging victorious with a score of 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4.
Huang's notable victories at the Weinman Foundation Invitational were against No. 9 NC State and No. 19 University of California Berkeley, both ranked in the ITA Division I Women's Preseason Top-25.
Notably, Huang's Big 12 Player of the Week award marks the first time any BYU tennis player, on the men's or women's side, has received a Big 12 weekly honor.
