Oklahoma State Game Week—BYU Media Availability

“Mid-way through the season, sitting at 6-0 and I’m happy about what the team’s been doing and the work the guys have put in. After watching the film on Saturday’s game, I am really pleased with the team and the directions we are headed, but we still have a lot of work to do, and we have to do that in a short week. We are playing a really good team on Friday against OSU who played in the championship game last year. They have a great head coach, Mike Gundy, one of the longest-tenured coaches in college football, so he’s seen it all and we know we are going to get their best shot.”

“We had a close one with OSU last year near the end of the season that went to double overtime and didn’t work out in our favor, so we are looking forward to this matchup and being a little more familiar with their roster, depth chart, coaching styles and schemes. The guys need to stay humble and stay hungry and keep working hard. This is a brand new week, and we are trying to go 1-0 every week.”

On last year’s loss to OSU
“I think that game was tough because we knew the season was coming close to an end and we had great seniors that sacrificed a lot to be here, and the hard part was saying goodbye to them and not extending the season. That game left a sour taste and was a sore spot for us, so this game is a chance to make things right. Not worried about the revenge factor, but I just want our guys to play really good, clean football and play at our best. It’s going to be a dog fight and it’s going to be a fun rematch on Friday night.”

On wide receiver Parker Kingston
“Parker is a great athlete with a high football IQ. He played quarterback at Roy High, so he has play-making ability. He can throw the ball, but he can also run. He just understands the game, and you combine that with speed and athleticism and that’s a great recipe for a really good player. He’s bought-in to his role and whatever he can do to help the team win, and I love having him on this team. I think he’s a big weapon for us.”

On how balanced the team is
“I’m just proud of the guys. They work hard and I think the spotlight is going to shine on guys when they make plays, but I like that they know it’s not just about them doing it all by themselves. They have 10 other teammates that are there with them making that play work. The guys are all bought-in to the team mentality. If everyone can keep doing their one-eleventh on the field and focusing on improvement, that will be the key for us this week.”

On OSU Running Back Ollie Gordon II
“He’s a dangerous player. It’s hard to keep a guy that talented down, and eventually he’s going to find ways to poke holes in your defense. We need to be assignment-sound and make it really difficult for him. He’s a next-level player, you can see he’s an NFL guy, so it’s a tough challenge. We saw it on film last year and we will see it this year. He’s the same guy with the same talent, tremendous speed and athleticism, so it will be a tough matchup.”

On his belief in this team
“I knew what these guys were capable of doing because I know the character that’s in them. We started working in January, and from that moment we have had a good feeling about them. It’s working on the scoreboard, but culture and connection are things you have to keep working on off the field as well.”

On Coach TJ Woods
“TJ is a really good coach and he understands football. He has a great connection with his players and will get the most out of them. He’s a great teacher and loves these young men and he wants to see them succeed. The players have all bought-in to his philosophy, which is right in alignment with that we want to do as a team.

On the running backs
“I’m okay with it being by committee week-by-week as long as we get yards and get guys that are healthy. We also want to ease guys into it. We have good, capable guys who can play, but we don’t want to force feed them. All of them need to get better, but it’s good to have guys who have battled.”

On linebacker Isaiah Glasker
“He’s bigger and stronger this year. He’s always been a great player and when we brought him in from Bigham, he was a skill position, playing safety and receiver, and we just had the thought to develop him into a linebacker. He gained weight and is one of the fastest players on our team, so that’s a good sign. It’s good to have our linebackers playing at such a high level.”

On teammate Parker Kingston
“He’s just an athlete and he can do whatever you tell him to do. I’m sure he could play corner too if you asked him too. He’s just that type of guy that’s good at everything. Throw him on the ping pong table and he’s going to whip you in ping pong. He’s just a great dude willing to do whatever. It’s awesome to see his work ethic and it paying off in everything.”

On team first mentality
“Obviously we all have those aspirations, and I think we understand that the best way to make it to the NFL is by winning games. That’s putting your team first and buying in to the culture. It’s buying into each other and loving each other. We’re seeing it pay off. We’re winning games and I think as we keep winning games there’s going to be more and more guys that jump on the radar for the NFL. We’re going to stick to that focus instead of our own individual accolades. We know that as we win games that we’ll have the opportunity to go to the next level.”

On last year’s loss in Stillwater and how it shaped this year’s success
“I mean, it always hurts to end the season like that. You never want to lose any games. Not being able to go to a bowl game instilled some fire into us. But really, when it came to the offseason, we had the mindset, no matter what happened last year, of this is a different team. We've got leaders on this team that are going to step up, and we've got the right people in the coaching staff and the coaching rooms to go and win a lot of games this year. There was some fire that came from last year, but we were going to do what we're doing this year no matter what.”

On what has attributed to this year’s success
“It’s the love that we have for each other, and the trust that we have in every individual on the team. We all bought it. There was no one left behind when it came to off season training. If someone messed up, they were held accountable, knowing that they would have an opportunity to play in a game this season, even if they were third on the depth chart. As we finished our off season training and came into season, everyone was ready for an opportunity to go and play and perform in a Big 12 game.”

On Coach TJ Woods
“Coach Woods has been great at getting us to play well as a unit, playing together as an entire O-line, and just focusing on our technique. He doesn't let the little things slide by. Poor footwork is not going to slide, poor hand placement is not going to slide. He really is focusing on all those techniques and making sure we're playing to the best of our abilities.”

On how it feels on the field when they are playing well
“It's just the mindset of trying to get better every week. We're practicing hard every day at practice, focusing on those things, and it's helping us succeed more as the season goes on, and I think we'll continue to improve as a unit.”

On reward as offensive line that hasn’t given up many sacks
“It's a good feeling to know that we’re protecting Jake (Retzlaff) to the best that we can, and it's just great seeing everybody on the team making plays. It helps everyone else out. Jake's breaking tackles and making throws, and the receivers are making tough catches, and the running backs are breaking tackles. All those things help make our jobs a little bit easier, so it's that whole team effort.”

On Oklahoma State’s defense from last year’s game
“That’s a stout D-line. They’re big, strong guys. I just remember we started off really well as an offense, being able to move the ball and score points. That's something we’ve got to focus on this year just keeping the foot on the gas the whole game, and not letting them come back in the end and make it close.”
On stopping opponents third downs conversions
“I think from our part, we’ve got to play with a little bit more poise out there. Number one, just kind of anticipating what we're going to see from them. We knew that third and long is a heavy, drawback pass down for them. Anticipating that and our communication on the back end, especially in some of those early drives in the game, could have been better. We can't ever complain about the stadium being too loud, but there were a couple times we were trying to communicate and make a couple checks where I had players standing less than ten feet from me that couldn't even hear me, so that definitely played a factor. We’ve just got to be more prepared, especially going into a night game this week, being able to signal and say things to each other that allow us to get the checks right and make sure that we put ourselves in the best position to make a play.”

On key to defense being resilient
“I think there's a number of factors that play into that. I think one of them definitely being that we have great coaches who analyze those first couple drives and see what blitzes and what coverages are working. Obviously, there’s small adjustments that we make too. It's honestly a blessing to have the tablets on the sideline, to be able to look at a couple plays after a drive, and really take the coaching points from the coaches and put it to the video. Previously you were just trying to remember in your head, but now you can actually put the headset on and be looking at the tablet and get live coaching and receive some meaningful insight. I think our coaches are able to adapt and adjust the game plan a little bit based on opening drives and what we see. I think Coach Hill is masterful at doing that.”

On areas where defense can improve moving forward
“I think we've been great at stopping the run in the first half of the season, but that's something that I think we can continue to improve upon and be even more stout upfront. Third downs, as we already mentioned, is an area where we can continue to focus and be great. Up to this point, I feel like we’ve played pretty well on first and second down and then sometimes we let them off the hook with big plays on third downs. Each game, we typically have a goal of combined sacks and turnovers. I don't know that we've reached that in any of our games so far this year, so I think focusing on getting takeaways and getting sacks. Those are game changing plays. Also continuing to put a lot of pressure on quarterbacks, which obviously leads to more takeaways as well. I think those are three things that we can definitely focus on going into the second half of the season.”

On importance in making sure OSU doesn’t find their rhythm this week in Provo
“Coming off a bye week, they’ve had some additional time to address a few things offensively for them that maybe weren't clicking or weren't working, and how they can fix that. For us, it's going to come down to focusing on mastering the game plan, understanding the scheme and what we're going to take away and how we're going to do it, and everyone being bought in to doing that. So, our preparation in these next four days, including Friday in the way that we prepare the day of the game, has to be better than their preparation. I'm confident that we will do that. I know that our coaches are confident that we will do that, and we trust them. I feel that as we go out and execute that game plan, the way that we expect to that we will come out with a win.”
