MONTEREY, Calif. – BYU men's golf holds a four-shot lead after shooting even-par on day two of the Leadership and Golf Collegiate at Bayonet Golf Course on Tuesday.
The Cougars posted an even-par 288 in Tuesday’s second 18-hole round to expand their lead heading into the final round. They hold a four-shot lead over second-place Santa Clara and a six-shot lead over third-place Sam Houston.
Simon Kwon (67-70–137) leads the tournament after he shot 2-under on Tuesday. He holds a two-shot lead over Carlos Astiazaran of Pacific and Matt Robles of Santa Clara. Kwon has carded two eagles throughout the tournament, the most out of any player.
"Hit the driver great and played to my strengths," Kwon said. "Never got too frustrated and stayed in the present. Pumped for tomorrow!"
Sophomore Peter Kim (69-72–141) is tied for sixth place after he carded an even-par 72 in his second round, keeping him at a 1-under total. Cole Ponich (71-72–143) boosted himself into the top 10 following his even-par second round.
Tyson Shelley (74-74–148) and Zac Jones (75-73–148), who is competing as an individual, are tied for 33rd place.
Angus Klintworth (75-78–153) sits tied for 61st after he shot six-over-par today. Freshman Kevin Wu (79-75–154) is competing as an individual and stands tied for 65th in the competition.
"I thought the team did a great job of picking the right moments to be aggressive," said Director of Golf Todd Miller. "If we can stay in the present and keep it on the fat side of the green we will have a great chance to win tomorrow."
