BYU starts play at Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge

The Cougars started competition against SMU in the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge and will play through the weekend.

DALLAS – The Cougars began competition in the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge in Dallas, Texas on Halloween Friday. The Cougars competing included, Adam Chodur, David Duong, Redd Owen, Tygen Goldammer, Otto Schreiner and TJ Wells. The doubles pairings were Chodur and Wells, Duong and Owen and Goldammer and Schreiner.

BYU began play in a matchup against the host Southern Methodist University. They played all six of their players in both singles and doubles. BYU was able to get the upper hand in the singles play winning four of the six matches. The Mustangs however controlled the doubles points as they were able to win two of the three doubles matches.

In singles play Chodur beat Maks Silagy in a grueling three-set win. Chodur won the long first set 7-5 then dropped the second one 5-7. This forced a super tiebreak for the set and Chodur bested Silagy 10-5.

Owen notched a win after getting out to an early lead. He took the first set 6-2. He was up in the second set 2-1 when the opponent Louis Cloud was not able to finish.

Duong picked up a win in two tough sets against Vikas Deo. Duong bested Deo in the first set 6-4 after lots of back-and-forth play between the two. The second set was even closer as it was forced to a tiebreak. Duong was victorious in winning the second set 7-6(8).

Schreiner was the final win in the singles as he faced off against Liam Sunkel. Schreiner was able to settle into the match and control much of the play. He beat Sunkel in two sets 6-2 6-3.

Goldammer and Wells dropped their matches to their SMU opponents. Goldammer faced off against Noah McDonald and lost a tough first-set tiebreak and then dropped the next set 6-3. Wells played Xavier Calvelo and was not able to get a set as he lost the match in two 6-4 6-3.

In the three doubles matches the Cougars lone win came from Goldammer and Schreiner. They played Deo and McDonald and won their set 7-5. Chodur and Wells had tough a 5-7 set not go their way and Duong and Owen lost 3-6 in their set.

Both singles and doubles play will continue tomorrow. Play will start at 8:00 a.m. with the first set of BYU matches scheduled for noon.
