Houston Game Week—BYU Media Availability

Back to Provo we come. It’s our last game here. After looking at last week, with the situation that we are in, we are obviously sitting at 9-2 and we have this last game to focus on. It’s for the seniors. This is their last go around and it’s their last time being in LaVell Edwards Stadium with them. We are looking to focus on them and performing at our best for them. We’ll be looking at and learning on things we can improve on from last week and the week before. We’re getting ready for a team like Houston who’s dangerous and who has surprised some teams along the way. Willie Fritz is a really good coach. He’s establishing his culture and his program. I know they are going to be excited to come here and play this game. We got to be ready for that. We’ve got to move on and control the stuff that we can control, which is performing our best. And also, to make sure that we give our fans and our seniors what they want, which is to end the season on a positive note with a win. It’s Super Bowl number 12 and away we go. I’m really proud of the team and the players and coaches for how hard they worked to get back in that game last week. I really just want to say thank you to all the fans that were in that stadium in Tempe. We had so much representation from our Cougar fans. Cougar Nation showed up, so they were awesome. I hope they know we appreciate and love them. We are looking forward to seeing all that royal blue at home on Saturday night.

On offense’s performance in second half against ASU
It’s a number of things. There are a lot of different variables that go into it. I think we have established what we want to get done in our games and how we want to approach our strategy. I liked what we did in the second half. I just want to see our team put points on the board and give us a chance. I think what we did in the second half is more like what we should do.

On Big 12 championship scenario
I think everybody knows a lot of the different scenarios. All I care about is focusing on the seniors and trying to find a way to control the stuff that we can control, which is how we play this weekend and prepare today. We’ll see what happens afterwards. The goal is to go 1-0 this week. That has to be our primary goal. We will deal with the results and how that affects everything else from there on.

On message to team before senior night
It’s a great week for us to look at gratitude and appreciation. It will be the theme of this week, and I think we have got to live it. There’s a lot to be thankful for, the situation that we are in. We would've liked our situation to be better. I don’t know how many of you expected us to be sitting at 9-2 at this time. We expected to be that or better. Now we are dealing with reality, which is sitting here in our position. At the same time, we should have a high level of appreciation and gratitude for where we are at, the people that we get to do it with and those that we represent. It’s really cool to have a different perspective on things now. The wins and losses are part of the sport, but learning and appreciating is something we can control as well.

On the mindset this week
Control this game. Not focus on anything else but what we have. That is playing against Houston and our preparation against Houston. You can’t be concerned about what everybody else is doing. We just have to be focused on this game and take advantage of what we have. We have something great going into this last week. We get to finish it at home and find a way to get one for the seniors. But also find a way to get double-digit wins and get that in our column. There are still a lot of really cool things to play for. This is only our second year in the conference. There is still a lot to play for. There are still all-conference accolades and things for the guys to play for. It’s a really cool vibe being in this partnership with the Big 12. It’s going to be a lot of fun. But really we are focusing on what we can control, which is our performance this weekend. That starts with what you do today.

On the senior class
These guys are awesome. It’s amazing to see how much they have grown. Literally, but also mentally and spiritually. They have become the men that their parents have wanted them to become. These guys have sacrificed a lot to be here. They have helped usher us into a power conference like the Big 12. They have done a great job representing us well. They aren’t perfect, but they are to me. I value, trust and love them. There is so much belief in this group. We are where we are at because of this senior leadership. They mean the world to me. We are in a position now because of what they have done in the last four or five years.

On Tyler Batty coming back
He’s meant so much. He’s been through so much. And he’s been offered so much. I don’t think it's a secret that he could have gone somewhere else for money if he wanted to. He’s all about legacy. He’s all about what he can do to help this program. You can see in the way he plays that he wants this place to succeed. We have done some great things because of him. He’s been a huge addition to our program. I love coaching him. He’s a local product from Payson. He’s one of the many seniors that we are going to honor. I feel really good about what he’s done here as a player and a captain.

On impact of seniors
It’s a huge part of where we are at now. They are a big part of us getting into the Big 12 and making sure we represent well in the Big 12. It’s on and off the field, and in the classroom. Seeing them interact with the other team, and their fans. They have done a great job. I love coaching these guys. I will do everything I can to help them. The program has been led by them. They can be really proud of what they have done. I can’t say enough to show my appreciation and love for them.

On practice schedule during Thanksgiving
We will move things up a little bit into the morning. We will give them an opportunity to be with their families . Everyone will have a place to go. Some of them will be at my house and different players. A lot of them have family members coming into town. It’s really cool to end the season in this particular week. To be home and be around family and loved ones to show them love and gratitude. They can do that by going out there and playing a game. What an honor for them to do that and show love to their families. This is going to be a lot of fun. We just want to make sure that we show our best because our seniors and our fans deserve that.

On his BYU experience
“Everything positive in my life from the last four years has had to do, in one form or another, with my interactions and attendance at BYU. I can attribute a lot of the positive things in my life to this university. This is where my parents met. This is where my Dad got his law degree to be able to provide for our family. The life that I’ve had and the life that my siblings have had has been because of BYU and what its given back to my family. Obviously, there’s a lot of emotions. I’m graduating this semester, and this will be my last time playing at LaVell Edwards Stadium. It’s an emotional week. It’s the end of an era in my life. I couldn’t be more grateful for the university, the athletic program and the Marriott School of Business. What I’m graduating in has been very much life-changing for me. I couldn’t see myself anywhere else.”

On why people are drawn to the BYU experience
“I think there’s a lot of reasons. Obviously, our faith is probably number one. I don’t think you can have a more faith-filled experience at any other university in the country regardless of what religion you follow. If you’re a person who has faith in God, that’s only going to be strengthened by coming to BYU. I think Jake [Retzlaff] has talked about how, even having a Jewish background, he’s grown stronger in his faith by being at BYU. [Faith] was one of the biggest draws for me. You get to rub shoulders with some amazing people, including church leaders and priesthood holders. For me, faith is the most important thing in my life. I think for me and my family, that’s the biggest draw. It’s a faith-filled institution. Being a private institution, we get to infuse that into every aspect of the university. In the classroom, on the football field, in team and position group meetings, we start all these things with a prayer. That really levels your head and brings you back to what is most important. You can have God with you every step of the way at this university, which is a special thing. It’s not that you can’t have that elsewhere but it’s fun to get that from both sides. It’s not only coming from me in my personal life but from the university reinforcing it.”

On the legacy of the 2024 senior class
“We hope that our legacy is one of resilience and toughness. We hope we represented BYU the right way as we carried it into the Big 12. We’re a group that, regardless of how things were going, we always showed up and never backed down even when things were going poorly. The resiliency to come back from how tough things were last year and try to help lead the team to where we are now, I hope that’s the legacy we can leave.”

On Houston’s defense
“They’re solid on defense, especially up front. Their strength shows up and sticks out on film. There are not very many people moving them off the line of scrimmage. They’re really big and strong. They mix up the fronts on you a little bit. They try to keep you thinking and guessing. They’re a quality defense. They play well as a unit and complement each other from first to second and third level.”

On bouncing back from two losses
“Staying process-oriented is the key and keeping the main thing the main thing. We need to stay focused and not get distracted with the Big 12 standings or whatever’s happening.”

On the 2024 senior class
“This is a special senior class. A lot of these guys had to fight through COVID. They’re still here putting a good product on the field and leading the guys. I’m proud of the guys for how they’ve led the team and pushed us in the right direction at every turn.”

On moving on from mistakes in Saturday’s game
"I definitely think about it. There’s no doubt that Saturday night I had a lot of thoughts going through my head, especially in a game where it’s that tight. Of course I think about that stuff but it’s Monday now. It’s a new week. Right now, that’s all been flushed and it’s about the news week.”

On Houston’s defense
“It’s a good defense. They’re tough in a lot of aspects. They play tough opponents tough. It’s going to be a fun battle on Saturday night.”

On the offense’s second-half improvements versus Arizona State
“Attention to detail and execution, it’s as simple as that. Looking back at the film, we had so many opportunities to make plays but we just didn’t execute at the level that we did in the second half. It shouldn’t take a fire to be lit under us like what happened. When you go down big, obviously, you think ‘we have to perform great or we’re going to get blown out.’ We put some of our best product on the field in the second half. I’m proud of the guys for showing resilience. When we’re down, we’re not out of it. I’m proud of how our guys learned from the first half and said ‘we’re not going to do that again. We’re going to go out there and make plays.’”

On defensive improvements in the second half versus Arizona State
"It was awesome to see our guys go out there and fight and lay everything on the line for each other. That’s a testament to what our defense is and the kind of mentality we come with.”

On senior day
“You never think this last [home game] is going to happen. This is my sixth season of college football. I see how far I’ve come and how far the rest of the seniors have come. This game means a lot. Everything we’ve prepared for and done throughout our whole careers has come down to this exact game, this very moment. It’s my last game at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Running out of that tunnel and onto that field, it’s a feeling like no other. Having the crow there, the fans, it’s truly euphoric. It’s truly going to be one to remember. I’m going to try my best to soak it all in. I’m beyond blessed to be here and be a part of this wonderful program. I’m truly honored that I get to finish my college football career here.”

On Houston’s offense
“They have a good offense. Obviously, they have some talented players. They show up. We’re excited to go out there and show up and get this win under our belt.”

On his favorite memory at LaVell Edwards Stadium
“For sure that Oklahoma State game [this season]. We were clawing and scratching for that win. For it to come down to the last second, it was incredible. The atmosphere, the feeling among the guys. It was cool because that was a moment I’d never had before. Everyone on the sideline believed and kept the confidence up to the very last second of the game. That’s what football is all about. Truthfully, it was kind of like a movie.”
