DALLAS — BYU finished play at the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge on Nov. 2. The Cougars competed over three days and racked up six wins on the first day, nine on the second and three on the final day of play. This will be the last tournament for many of the Cougars in the fall season.
“This weekend was the final fall event for several of our players, and we had several great results in Dallas,” said BYU head coach Zack Warren. “It was a great opportunity to showcase the hard work they have been putting in over the last two months and they are feeling motivated to continue getting better so they’re ready to go for the beginning of the dual match season.”
BYU was able to dominate play at the beginning of day two. Everyone picked up a straight-set singles win against their opponents from Prairie View A&M. They played PVAM in both singles and doubles and were undefeated in both.
The Cougars didn’t play more doubles but did have another round of singles later in the day. None of BYU’s players were able to pick up a win in the later window. Redd Owen and Tygen Goldammer both forced their matches into third-set tiebreaks but were ultimately unable to convert as they fell to players from Texas Tech and TCU, respectively. Adam Chodur also matched up against a TCU opponent and was beaten in two close sets.
David Duong, TJ Wells and Otto Schreiner all had matchups against Nebraska players. All three players were within a few games of forcing their matches into third sets. However, they were unsuccessful and dropped their matches in two.
The Cougars finished the day 6-6 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.
On the last day of play, BYU matched up against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Goldammer, Duong and Chodur all picked up two set wins on Saturday. Owen, Wells and Schreiner all forced third-set tiebreaks in their matches. Ultimately, they were not able to prevail as each of them lost by just two points in their tiebreakers.
This will be the last tournament of the fall for most of these players and they will look forward to the dual-match season beginning in the Spring of 2025. Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs do have one more tournament this upcoming week in California on Nov. 7-9. That will officially wrap up BYU’s fall tournament slate.
