STOCKTON -- Another lead got away from BYU as it dropped a 4-3 decision to the University of Pacific on Thursday.
Pacific jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, then the Cougars responded with a three-run rally in the second inning.
A Tiger error allowed BYU to put two runners aboard in the second and Doug Jackson singled in Kevin Bills to tie the score at one-all. Ranger Wiens' one-out double scored Han Yi and Jackson to give BYU a 3-1 lead, but the Cougar sophomore was thrown out trying to stretch his position to third base. Matt Carson followed with a two-out double, but was stranded.
Carson extended his hitting streak to 10 games and was also hit by a pitch in the first inning, the fifth time he has been beaned this season. Carson reached third base in the first inning, but was stranded.
Pitcher Ryan Adams and company kept the Tigers at bay until the sixth inning. Then Pacific put together three consecutive hits to score two runs and tie the game at 3-3, thanks to a two-run double by Tim Gilhooly.
Pacific scored its game-winning run in the seventh with two outs when Aaron Harper singled in Jeff Jodlowski.
BYU stranded eight runners, including Yi who had a lead-off double in the seventh and Carson who was intentionally walked with two-outs in that inning.
The Cougars, 2-9, play Pacific, now 2-2, again on Friday evening and on Saturday afternoon.
