PROVO -- Scott Koffman flirted with a no-hitter through five innings Tuesday to lead BYU to a 15-5 victory over Southern Utah University.
"Scott pitched very well and I was trying to get him through six innings," said BYU Coach Vance Law.
Three consecutive T-Bird singles each up the middle to lead off the sixth inning broke up Koffman's no-hitter and shutout and erased a 6-0 lead.
The Cougars, 25-15, gave the freshman righthander plenty of support, including four home runs to the delight of 862 fans at Larry H. Miller Field.
Lead-off batter Doug Jackson got his first homer of the season as the first batter of the game. Matt Carson followed solo suit, knocking his 15th dinger. A double by Ty Haguewood scored Kainoa Obrey and Michael Wirrick who each walked in the first. Tyler Perry followed with another double to drive in Haguewood.
Carson doubled in the second and was driven in by Obrey. Tyler Perry responded to "The Natural" music and belted a two-run homer over centerfield to give BYU an 8-4 lead in the sixth. Perry extended his hitting streak to five games with a team-leading four of five effort, getting two hits from each side of the plate.
Jackson got a three-run triple to right center to push BYU up to 11-5. Shane Belliston then homered to right to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Belliston extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Former Cougar Sky Grant came in to pitch in the eighth for the T-Birds.
"My fastball and changeup kept them off balance," said Koffman, who improved to 2-0. "I knew I had a no-hitter going, but I just wish I could have ended it better. They put up four runs real quick."
BYU hosts a three-game series with Utah, beginning Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m., followed by the grand opening of Miller Park on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
