Dons Win in Extra Innings

SAN FRANCISCO -- In the 13th inning BYU walked in the winning run Wednesday to lose a heartbreaking baseball game, 13-12.

The score had been tied 12-all through Tuesday's action which was called because of darkness at Benedetti Diamond after nine innings.

The Cougars had a runner on in each of the 10th, 11th, and 12th innings, but failed to score. The Dons also had a runner on in the 10th and 12th innings and got four innings of two-hit relief from winning pitcher Kevin Rose. James Ray, who was on the mound Tuesday in relief for the Cougars, pitched two more innings on Wednesday before giving way to Kevin Ward.

Cougar outfielder Matt Carson registered the best numbers, going four-of-seven with three RBI, including a double and a triple in Tuesday's innings. On Wednesday, Carson was the first Cougar to get on board with a single in the 10th when he also stole second. BYU pinch hitter Cameron Coughlan led off the 12th with a single and advance to second and third, but again a strikeout ended the Cougars' chances.

USF scored in the 13th after three consecutive walks brought in Steve Booth, who singled.

BYU's record is now 4-3 going into a three-day, three-game series at Cal-Berkeley starting on Thursday. USF is now 2-2. The Cougars are scheduled to start Ryan Adams in the first game against the Bears, who have a 3-0 record. There is no live internet coverage of the Cal-BYU games.
