TEMPE -- Despite a valiant comeback, BYU's baseball team lost game two of the Tempe Diablos Classic Friday to Florida Atlantic, 12-9.
Down 9-1 in the sixth inning, BYU got rallies of two runs in the bottom of the sixth, four runs in the seventh and two more runs in the ninth.
Keying those rallies were Cougar shortstop Seth King who hit a pair of doubles for two RBI and pinch-hitter Cameron Coughlan who also had a double, a single and one RBI. BYU pinch hitter Nick Greene also recorded a pair of RBI even though he didn't register a hit in three at bats.
The Owls, meanwhile, had a pair of home runs from Ryan Withey, and homers from teammates Tommy Murphy, Anthony Mongelluzzo and Mike Elliott. Withey, the leftfielder, was perfect at the plate going three for three with three RBI, two walks and one of two stolen bases for FAU.
Pitcher Micah Mangrum took the loss although he struck out five FAU batters in five innings and gave up five runs. BYU Coach Vance Law played 23 of his 32 players in this game, with his substitutions reaping those dividend rallies.
BYU drops to 0-2, while FAU is 1-0.
