SALT LAKE -- For the first time since 2001 BYU baseball swept Utah in a three-game series, winning a doubleheader on Saturday at Franklin Covey Field, 6-4 and 10-5.
BYU, now 12-14 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference, jumped out to early leads in both games over the Utes, now 11-15 and 2-7, behind solid pitching and quickly countering Utah scoring rallies.
"Sweeping anybody is great, especially in as tight as our league race has been," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We got good pitching and kept battling back."
Starter Michel Bergeron took a two-hitter with a 3-0 lead in game one before Utah touched him for three runs in the sixth. The first of those BYU runs was a lead-off home run by Jake Stubblefield on the first pitch of the second inning.
The Cougars answered that Utah three-run rally with a three-run performance in the seventh, aided by Stubblefield's two-run single.
In the nightcap, Ryan Chambers continued his team-leading 10-game hitting streak with a first-inning triple which helped BYU off to a 2-0 start. The Cougars increased that lead to 5-0 when Chambers singled in one run in the third and later scored when Stubblefield beat out a single. Chambers scored BYU's sixth run in the fifth with a lead-off double and again was driven in by Stubblefield, who belted a double.
Stubblefield scored BYU's eighth run in the fifth when he was knocked in by Brock Jacobsen's single. Jacobsen also contributed a defensive gem in game one when he layed out in centerfield to catch Wick Udy's fly ball.
In game two, BYU starter Ken Gravley ended up leaving the game with an 8-2 lead by the time he left the game in the sixth inning.
Adding the final blows to the Cougar lead was a two-run, pinch-hit homer by Clayton Carson in the ninth.
The Cougars continue to play on the road, next starting a three-game series this Thursday at San Diego State.
