ALBUQUERQUE -- San Diego State survived the elimination game in the nightcap Friday at the Mountain West Conference Baseball Tournament, defeating BYU, 15-7.
SDSU wore its solid black uniforms, high leg stockings included for starter Daryl Harang, a style resurrected from the days Coach Tony Gwynn was a player there. Earlier in the day the Aztecs had lost 13-1 to undefeated UNLV to earn the right to play again in the nightcap.
BYU's Doug Jackson drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a high-chopping single which bounded over the Aztec first baseman. He then scored as Ranger Wiens grounded into a double play to give BYU a 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs took a 2-1 lead after Landon Burt got hit by the first of two pitches in consecutive innings and Anthony Gwynn singled. Both were driven in by Josh Allen's double to the berm in centerfield. They increased that lead when Curt Mendoza hit a two-run single, making the score 4-1 through one complete inning.
BYU regained the lead when Kevin Bills scored off a fielder's choice by Ryan Chambers. Bills was the last of four straight hits racked up by the Cougars in the second, starting with Jake Stubblefield's lead-off single. Stubblefield was singled home by Brock Jacobsen's full count triple to the right center hole. A wild throw from James Guerrero allowed Rob Itri to score earlier in the inning. Itri's single had driven in Jacobsen.
A highlight from the second frame for BYU was when Clay Barnes fanned Anthony Gwynn looking on a full count with men on first and second to end the inning.
Garrett Cook accounted for three of SDSU's seven runs in the third with a lead-off homer and a two-run double as the Aztecs chased Barnes off the mound. At that juncture the Aztecs took an 11-5 lead.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the fifth, BYU's coming from an RBI triple by Ranger Wiens which scored Jackson. Wiens, one of the nation's top three doubles hitters could have stopped at second, but unselfishly extended to third as the Cougars tried to battle back, 13-7.
The Cougars end their season with a 30-24 record, while SDSU improved to 29-31.
