HUNTSVILLE -- Sam Houston State again scored eight runs, but this time it blanked BYU's baseball team Friday afternoon, 8-0.
Both teams, now 1-1, square off for a rubber match on Saturday at noon. The Cougars won the opener, 17-8, on Thursday.
On Friday the Cougars appeared to start out well with Leon Johnson leading off on a bunt single then stealing second, his third swipe of the season. However, he was caught stealing third. Teammate Kent Walton got aboard on an error with two outs but was thrown out at home from centerfield to end the inning.
In the third, Daniel Vargas and Johnson led off with back-to-back singles. Then Vargas was thrown out on a double steal attempt, and the Cougars flied out consecutively.
In the fifth, J.T. Musso got his first hit of the season and advanced to second on a balk but was stranded on third after a fly-out.
The remaining two hits for BYU came in the ninth with a lead-off pinch-hit single by Stephen Wells, followed by a double from Walton. But three straight whiffs ended the game.
Walton continued his hitting streak, now at 10 games. Apana Nakayama, who redshirted last year, now has a six-game hitting streak, carried over from the 2005 season.
The Bearkats took a 4-0 lead in the third, aided by Bobby Verbick's RBI triple and Karl Krailo's RBI double. They also set the Cougars down in order in the second, fourth, seventh and eighth innings.
It was the first time in the past 125 games that BYU has been shut out dating back to April of 2004, 1-0 at New Mexico.
