PROVO -- Fifteen runs on 18 hits propelled BYU to a win in the first of a three-game series against Binghamton University Friday at Larry H. Miller Field.

BYU improves to 15-12 with the win over the Bearcats. The team was led by Apana Nakayama with a two-run home run, Austin Hall with three hits and two walks, and six shut-out innings from starting pitcher Jake Wortham.

The Cougars put up a four spot in the first on Nakayama's two-run bomb and a two-out, RBI single from Jason Johnson with some help from Binghamton pitcher Zach Groh who walked another run in.

After a rocky first, Groh settled in a bit. He pitched himself into a jam in the third, but battled his way out. BYU had the bases loaded with only one out and a 3-1 count to Stephen Wells at the plate. Wells flied out and Nakayama came to the plate with a homerun and a walk under already on the day. With the count at 1-0, he hit a grounder to first and ended the inning leaving all three runners stranded.

After giving up a single, a stolen base, and a walk without recording an out in the fourth, Groh's day was over. Sophomore right-hander Greg Lane came on in relief for the Bearcats to try to stop the bleeding.

The Cougars put the pressure on him from the get-go, however, with a double steal on Lane's first pitch to put runners at second and third with no outs. BYU's Kasey Ko flied to shallow right for the first out of the inning and Jason Johnson popped out to shallow left on the next pitch for the second out. J.T. Musso then hit a come-backer off the pitchers mound to score both runners for BYU's fifth and sixth runs of the inning. The inning ended when Musso was thrown out attempting to steal second.

Entering the fifth inning, Wortham was still going strong. He had given up only three hits, no walks and no runs. With one out in the fifth he allowed his first base on balls to Pat Haughie and then a single hit to Kyle Klee. Justin Smucker tried to bunt his way on base, but Wortham threw Haughie out at third on the fielder's choice and struck out Ryan James looking to end the inning and the scoring threat.

BYU scored again in the fifth on a triple from Austin Hall and a sacrifice fly from Leon Johnson. Wells got on with a single and Nakayama moved him to third on a fielding error at second base. With runners at the corners and one out, Kent Walton struck out, but Steve Parker scored both runners on a double to center field.

Ko scored Parker on an infield hit that was bobbled by the short stop. Jason Johnson reached on the second error of the inning at second base and Musso loaded the bases on an error at third base. After leading off the inning with a triple, Hall got his fourth hit of the game on a double to the center-field wall, scoring all three runners. The seven-run fifth for the Cougars came to an end on a Leon-Johnson fly out to right field.

Thomas Bills replaced Ko in the field in the fifth and singled his first time at bat in the seventh inning. He moved to second on a single from Mike McKeever and to third when Austin Hall walked to reach base for the fifth time in the game. Leon Johnson scored Bills on a bases-loaded single and Wells grounded out to the pitcher to end the Cougar seventh.

Pinch hitting for Nakayama in the eighth inning, Collin Fanning hit the third triple on the day for BYU and scored on a sacrifice fly to shallow right field from Chris Johnson.
