BYU fell 55-30 to Boise State at Albertsons Stadium. The Cougars are 4-4 on the season and 542-397-26 all time.
Kai Nacua and Kevin O’Mary carried the team and special teams flags, respectively. Former tight end Spencer Nead (2001-02) carried the alumni flag.
Official attendance for the game was 36,752.
BYU tallied its second safety of the year on Logan Taele’s tackle in the end zone with 1:26 left in the first half.
The second-quarter interception by Christian Stewart ended a string of 110 pass attempts without an interception (11th all-time at BYU).
Christian Stewart’s 81-yard pass to Colby Pearson is BYU’s longest scoring play from scrimmage this year.
On Fred Warner’s 20-yard pick-6, the Cougars scored their first defensive touchdown since Bronson Kaufusi’s interception return against Idaho State in 2013.
The Cougars have lost four in a row for the first time since 2010.
The last time an opponent accumulated more than 600 total yards was in a 72-45 loss to Hawai’i in 2001, when the defense allowed 646 yards. Boise State had 637.
The most total yards given up in 2013 was also to Boise State with 499 in the 37-20 BYU win in Provo.
The 25-point margin of defeat is the largest since BYU’s 54-10 loss to Utah in 2011, and the Broncos’ 55 points are the most given up since a 55-47 loss to Tulsa in 2007.
Since 2008 BYU is 5-9 when time of possession is less than 26:00.
PLAYER NOTES
Senior punter Scott Arellano had three punts of at least 50 yards, bringing his season total to 15 and surpassing his 2013 total of 13. He averaged 48.4 yards per punt in the game and registered a career-long 76-yarder.
Sophomore defensive back Garrett Juergens returned the first kickoff of his career, returning a total of five on the night for 99 yards and a long of 31.
Junior running back Jamaal Williams returned from injury and scored BYU’s first touchdown of the game on a 17-yard run with 9:12 left in the second quarter. He carried the ball 16 times for 70 yards on the night.
Sophomore receiver Colby Pearson caught his second touchdown pass of the year. He is the third Cougar to have over 100 receiving yards in a game this season and ended the game with 109 yards on five receptions.
Freshman linebacker Fred Warner returned Grant Hedrick’s interception 20 yards for the touchdown, both firsts for Warner. He tallied four total tackles including three solo in the loss.
Junior linebacker Bronson Kaufusi registered his third sack on the year and fifth pass breakup in the past four games. He also tallied a season-high seven total tackles and notched his third-consecutive game with at least a half tackle for loss.
Senior quarterback Christian Stewart recorded his first rushing TD of the year (2-yard run). His string of consecutive pass attempts without an interception ended at 110, ranking 11th all-time among BYU quarterbacks. Stewart ended the game throwing 23 for 38 with 259 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Junior defensive lineman Logan Taele notched three tackles, including a tackle for loss that scored a safety for BYU, cutting the Boise State lead to 16-34 with 1:26 left in the first half.
