Allgeier named Phil Steele fourth-team All-American

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Recognition keeps rolling in for BYU running back Tyler Allgeier as the sophomore was today named a Phil Steele Fourth Team All-American. Earlier in the week, Allgeier was named second-team All-America by The Sporting News.

Allgeier, who was a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, is tied for the national lead in rushing touchdowns with 20 and is eighth in rushing yards with 1,409. He is third in total touchdowns and No. 6 in rushing yards per game with 117.4.

He was one of 10 Cougars named to the Phil Steel All-Independent Teams, joining quarterback Jaren Hall, wide receiver Puka Nacua, tight end Isaac Rex, right guard Clark Barrington, right tackle Blake Freeland, cornerback Kaleb Hayes, punter Ryan Rehkow, linebacker Payton Wilgar and free safety Malik Moore.

Allgeier finished the 2021 regular season ranked No. 1 among all Independent teams in touchdowns, rushing yards, rushing yards per game, scoring per game (10), total points (120) and all-purpose yards (133), He was No. 2 in rush yards per carry (5.6) and No. 4 in points responsible (120) and points responsible per game (10).

In week nine of the 2021 season, Allgeier was named Capital One Orange Bowl Player of the Week and honorable mention College Football Performance Awards National Performer of the Week for his 266-yard, five-touchdown performance, leading nationally ranked BYU to a 66-49 win over Virginia. His 266 yards were the third-highest single-game total in BYU history.

During the 2021 regular season, Allgeier was named Independent Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness three times and earned a helmet sticker from ESPN College Football Final host Matt Barrie following the Virginia game. He was also named to Kirk Herbstreit’s players of the week for his 218-yard, three-touchdown performance in leading BYU to a 34-20 win over Mountain West champion Utah State in week five of the season.

Allgeier is currently No. 7 all-time at BYU in career rushing with 2,707 yards. He is No. 1 in career yards per carry with 6.73 and fifth in career rushing touchdowns with 33. His 1,409 rushing yards in 2021 is the second-highest single-season rushing total in BYU history behind 2001 Doak Walker Award winner Luke Staley who had 1,582 that season. His season average of 7.53 yards per carry, 20 rushing touchdowns and 249 rushing attempts are also second all-time at BYU among single-season achievements behind Staley.

In addition to being named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, Allgeier was on the watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Paul Hornung Award and the CFPA National Performer of the Year.

In 2020, he finished No. 8 nationally with 1,130 rushing yards and was No. 4 in yards per carry at 7.53 for the No. 11-ranked Cougars.
