Postgame Quotes

BYU forward Yoeli Childs

What was working for you guys tonight?

"Guys just broke it open. I think it’s really important for us to share the ball and make the extra pass and that’s what we started doing in the last four minutes of the first half. Then we did a good job at doing that in the beginning of the second half as well. When we make plays for each other, it’s so fun for us to play out there and we’re a lot better."

What did you think of the production of players off the bench?

"Awesome. I’m so happy for those guys. This is probably the deepest team that I’ve played on. We would play in the summer and we would do pick-up and you would make the captains and teams and you would be like “I have no idea who I’m taking.” There are just so many options. It’s so awesome when you bring a guy like Rylan off the bench, when you bring a guy like Connor off the bench and they can come in and play like a starter, especially as a freshman and sophomore it’s huge and they’re going to have really big careers here."

You hit 1000 points tonight, what are your thoughts?

"It means that coaches run a lot of stuff for me and players pass me the ball a lot. To get 1000 points, that’s a lot of shots, so I appreciate my guys. I think every individual accomplishment is a team accomplishment because you can’t do it without your guys, you can’t do it without your guys making plays for you. Most of my buckets are off assists from guys, so they penetrate and get me open, so I’m grateful for that and I’m grateful for the system and for the trust that the coaches have in me."

BYU guard Rylan Bergersen

How good did it feel to contribute off the bench?

"It felt really good. It felt good to come out there and bring us a spark off the bench. I came in at the end of the first half and I was just trying to do my best and all I could to help the team out."

What’s your mentality when your number gets called off the bench?

"I think it’s a little bit nervous, but I think it’s excitement more than anything. I’m excited to get in the game and I’m waiting the whole game for my number to be called. It’s just excitement when I get there and try to make defensive plays first and do offensive second and just do all I can to help out."

BYU head coach Dave Rose

On tonight's game

"That was a good win for our guys. I’m excited for the results, I thought we did a few things really, really well and obviously we’ve got a lot of things we still need to work on. We got to the free-throw line and I thought we were pretty good from the line. We also assisted the ball pretty well. I’m happy with the win and we’ll go into Saturday and try and finish the week off."

On winning the rebounding battle

"Oral Roberts rebounds the ball really well. Last year they were one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country. We did a good job of keeping them off the boards, they only had three offensive rebounds. For us it’s kind of the way we are going to have to be and play. TJ had eight rebounds, Jahshire had four and Connor had seven. Those are numbers that are going to be really important for us because this will be a team where our guards really have to help us and be good defensive rebounders. I think Dalton, Yoeli, Luke and Gavin will get their share, but in order for us to win that battle every night I think it’s going to have to be one of those teams where our guards are getting them."

On scoring production from the bench

"I thought Connor came in and gave us a great lift and I thought Gavin came in and helped us. He was sick yesterday and missed practice and I didn’t know how many minutes I would be able to play him tonight, but I thought he did really well with the minutes he had. Rylan really gave us a spark at the end of the first half. That was good to see, to have those guys come in and really contribute and participate and get some confidence."

On the defensive performance

"I think we have a good purpose to us defensively. I think we’ve had a good plan and we’ve been working on some things to see if we can get better at them, especially after that Nevada game. I think our guys have been dialed in pretty well. Defensive rebounding is so important to your defensive stops. We were talking as coaches that that’s the one thing constantly across four games that I think we’ve done well. Our execution defensively hasn’t been perfect, it hasn’t been exact, but our focus and our urgency has been good."
