Cougars to Host Arizona State
BYU men’s basketball (6-1) will host Arizona State — the team that gave the Cougars their first loss in 2008-09 — Tuesday in the Marriott Center at 8 p.m. Playing at University of Phoenix Stadium last season, BYU hit a potential game winner at the buzzer that was called good on the court but later overturned after a review by the officials. Tuesday’s game can be heard live on KSL Newsradio beginning with the pregame show at 7 p.m. MT on 102.7 FM and 1160 AM or via the Internet at KSL.com. The game will be televised live on The Mtn.

— With 13 points vs. San Francisco, Jimmer Fredette has scored in double figures in 21-straight games, the longest such streak since Travis Hansen scored in double figures in 21-straight games during the 2002-03 season. Looking at Arizona State
Arizona State is 6-2 on the season and is coming off a home loss to Baylor, 64-61. The Sun Devils started the season with four straight wins, all at home, before losing to Duke in the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. They rebounded with a win over LSU in the NIT consolation game and then defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home before the Baylor loss. Arizona State is 5-1 in home games and 1-1 in neutral games. The Sun Devils have yet to play a true road game this season. Rihards Kuksiks leads Arizona State in scoring at 12.3 points per game and is shooting .396 from downtown with 21 makes. Derek Glasser averages 11.5 points and leads the team with 5.3 assists per game. Eric Boateng is the third scorer in double figures, also at 11.5 per game, and leads the team in rebounding (6.6 per game) and shooting percentage (.700). Trent Lockett averages 9.5 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per contest. As a team Arizona State averages 73.2 points and shoots .510 from the field while their opponents average 56.0 points and shoot .385 from the field. Arizona State’s Last Outing — Arizona State Falls Late to Baylor, 64-61
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)--Tweety Carter tied a season high with 27 points, including two free throws with 14.3 seconds remaining, and LaceDarius Dunn made an uncontested layup with five seconds left as Baylor beat Arizona State 64-61 to continue the Big 12’s unbeaten run in the Big12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series. Carter made 7 of 9 3-pointers after hitting all six of his 3-point attempts while scoring 27 points in his last game, a 69-64 victory over Xavier on Nov. 29. Carter made 3-point field goals on four of five Baylor possessions to key a 13-0 run that gave the Bears (7-1) a 52-47 lead with 5:21 remaining. Rihards Kuksiks, who led Arizona State (6-2) with 16 points, scored 11 straight Sun Devil points, tying the game at 58 on a 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining. Kuksiks made one of his first 12 field goal attempts before hitting his last four.

Tuesday’s game will be the 49th meeting between BYU and Arizona State with the Cougars owning a 26-22 advantage in the series. Arizona State won last season at University of Phoenix Stadium 76-75. Charles Abouo hit a shot at the buzzer for BYU that was called good by the officials. The play was reviewed and the call overturned, giving the win to the Sun Devils. The Cougars had won the previous two meetings and four of five between the schools before last season’s setback. Jimmer Fredette had 23 points in BYU’ 87-70 win over Weber State, his fourth 20-point game this season and 12th of his career. BYU is 10-2 when Fredette scores 20 or more and has won the last nine games in which he has reached the 20-point mark. With three-straight 20-point games to start 2009-10, he matched his longest streak for consecutive games with 20 or more points. The first streak came last season when he had 21 at Utah (Jan. 27, 2009), 28 at home against Wyoming (Jan. 31) and 20 at Air Force (Feb. 3).
First Career Start
Freshman Tyler Haws started for the first time in his young career at Hawai’i, helping the Cougars to an 83-65 win over the Rainbow Warriors. He chipped in a career-best 12 points, one assist and one steal in the victory while playing a career-high 25 minutes. He has now started five-straight games for the Cougars. Noah Hartsock made his first career start vs. San Francisco and turned in five points, two assists, two blocks, two steals and two points in 28 minutes of action.
Improved Depth
BYU’s bench has scored at least 21 points six times and in double figures in all seven games this season, including 21 against Bradley, 30 vs. Idaho State, 23 at Hawai’i, a season-high of 46 vs. Southern, 25 vs. Weber State and 23 vs. San Francisco. Last season the BYU bench scored 20-plus points just eight times all season.
