PROVO -- Suffering from a cold shooting night, the No. 3/3 BYU men’s basketball team fell to New Mexico 82-64 for its first home loss of the season Wednesday night in the Marriott Center.

The Cougars (27-3, 13-2) shot just 33.9 percent for the game and managed to make only 5-of-26 three-point attempts. Meanwhile, the Lobos (19-11, 7-8) shot 46.6 percent for the game, including 45 percent from behind the arc.

"New Mexico played really well," head coach Dave Rose said. "They played a great game. They came out with a lot of energy and they were efficient."

Senior guard Jimmer Fredette scored 33 points, made 12-of-12 free throws and had four steals. Senior Jackson Emery added 11 points and had four steals as well.

"We got down 10 or 12 points and it was like we were trying to score five or six points in a possession and we just got in a hurry," Rose said. "We were never really able to get in a rhythm."

New Mexico started the game of on a roll, knocking down their first four shots to take a 10-2 lead with 17:53 remaining in the first half.

Steady shooting would help the Lobos maintain a 20-12 lead with 11:46 left until halftime. BYU struggled from the field, starting the game with 4-of-15 shooting.

At halftime, New Mexico would hold a double-digit lead at 42-26 after shooting 47 percent, making 15-of-32 shots while BYU shot just 26.7 percent. The 16-point deficit at halftime was the largest the Cougars have faced at the break all season.

Fredette and Emery led BYU’s scoring with eight points apiece heading into the locker room.

The Lobos would continue to shoot well in the second half, extending their lead to 56-37 with 13:34 left in the game. New Mexico had made 50 percent of its three pointers to that point, including five from junior Phillip McDonald.

The Cougars would cut the lead to 11 but then the Lobos would go on an 11-0 run to stretch their lead even further. BYU would trail by 20 with less than nine minutes to play and the score 65-45.

Fredette did his best to try and the keep the Cougars in it, scoring 17 straight points for BYU over a six minute span but the team would still trail New Mexico 77-58 with 3:58 left in the game.
