LIHUE, Hawai’i — Behind a pair of 69s from Patrick Fishburn and Peter Kuest, No. 31 BYU men’s golf is tied for third place after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course on Thursday.
"We got off to a good start today," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We were a little sloppy in the middle of the round, but then we finished strong. We are in good company for tomorrow's round. Hopefully we can get out and put some pressure on UNLV by shooting a great score tomorrow."
The Cougars shot -4 as a team in round one and are tied for third place with North Carolina. UNLV leads the field of teams at -18, while Texas A&M fired -5 to claim second. West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary’s is tied for fifth place with in-state rival Utah at -3.
Fishburn and Kuest shot -3 to tie for ninth place after 18 holes. Fishburn birdied five holes in round one, while Kuest birdied two and eagled one.
Rhett Rasmussen finished the first round at even par. He birdied three holes and is tied for 26th place. Kelton Hirsch fired a 74 on Thursday to tie for 46th place heading into round two. Hirsch shot a team-low 33 on the back nine, before shooting 41 on the front.
CJ Lee is tied for 61st place after carding a first-round 75. Spencer Dunaway and Chad Hardy competed as individuals with Dunaway firing a 76 and Hardy shooting a 78.
