ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Peter Kuest shot a combined eleven-under Friday to put himself in first place and the Cougars in third after day one at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.
“Peter played some absolutely great golf today,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “Shooting a 63 on this course is amazing. All the guys hung in there today but we’re going to need everyone to step up tomorrow to catch the teams ahead of us.”
Kuest fired a tournament-low 63 (-9) in the first round, which included back-to-back eagles on holes 14 and 15. His second-round 70 (-2) put him four strokes ahead of Arizona’s Trevor Werbylo, who currently sits in second place, heading into tomorrow’s final round.
Rhett Rasmussen had a strong opening-day performance for the Cougars as well, finishing the day tied for sixth after posting a combined 140 (-4). Carson Lundell, Kelton Hirsch and Cole Ponich rounded out the scoring for BYU after they each carded 148’s (+4) through rounds one and two to finish tied for 41st.
Brock Stanger, competing as an individual, finished the day tied for 26th after shooting a 74 (+2) in round one and a 70 (-2) in round two.
The Cougars found themselves in first place after the first round, posting a tournament-low 278 (-10) as a team. After finishing round two, BYU now currently sits just four strokes behind tournament-host New Mexico, and five behind first-place Arizona.
WCC foe Loyola Marymount finished day one in seventh place, while in-state rival Utah finished in sixth. A third and final round will be played tomorrow morning, with live stats and the full leaderboard available at GolfStat.com.
