LIHUE, Hawai’i — Peter Kuest fired a 69 (-3) Thursday to put himself and the BYU men’s golf team tied for first place after the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
"We came out strong today and were able to show everyone what we're capable of," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "The guys played well and they were all in contention for most of the day. We just need to continue to minimize our mistakes if we want to come out on top."
As a team, the Cougars shot a 287 (-1) on the afternoon to finish the day tied with the University of North Carolina Wilmington for first place.
Kuest posted four birdies Thursday and recorded a tournament-low 3.70 par-4 scoring average to finish the first round tied with four other golfers atop the leaderboard.
Kelton Hirsch followed, ending the day tied for 10th place after shooting a first-round 71 (-1). He also carded four birdies Thursday. Carson Lundell recorded a team-high five birdies on the afternoon to finish day one tied for 24th with a 73 (+1).
Spencer Dunaway and Cole Ponich wrapped up the scoring for BYU and currently sit tied for 38th and tied for 89th places, respectively. Dunaway posted a first-round 74 (+2) while Ponich carded a 77 (+5).
Competing as an individual, Brock Stanger shot a 71 (-1) to tie with Hirsch for 10th place.
Following the Cougars and UNCW, Texas A&M, UC Irvine and New Mexico currently round out the tournament’s top-five. WCC foes Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara enter tomorrow’s second round tied for eighth and tied for 13th places, respectively, while in-state rival Utah is tied for 17th.
