BYU in second after round two of Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Hawai’i — BYU men’s golf shot a 284 (-4) in the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Friday to end the day in second place.

"It's nice to be in the hunt," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "All of the guys are playing solid golf. If we finish just a bit better tomorrow we'll have a good chance down the stretch."

Kelton Hirsch and Peter Kuest both finished the day in the top-10 individually after posting second-round scores of 71 (-1) and 72 (E), respectively. Kuest, who currently holds the second-best par-4 scoring average at the tournament with a 3.85, sits tied for fifth place while Hirsch is tied for seventh.

Spencer Dunaway led the Cougars on Friday with a team-best 70 (-2). He currently holds the second-best par-3 scoring average with a 2.88 and is tied for 23rd place. Carson Lundell is tied for 33rd after posting his second-consecutive 73 (+1) while Cole Ponich is tied for 51st after firing a one-under 71 on the day.

Brock Stanger, competing as an individual, carded a second-round 77 (+5) to end the day tied for 51st.  

BYU enters tomorrow’s third and final round just two strokes behind current leader Texas A&M. New Mexico, UNCW and Illinois round out the tournament’s top-five while WCC foes Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara are tied for eighth and tied for 15th, respectively. In-state rival Utah also sits tied for 15th.

Tomorrow’s final round of 18 holes will tee off at 11 a.m. MST. Live stats and the leaderboard will be available on Golfstat.com.
