CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The BYU men’s golf team shot a combined 582 (+6) through the first two rounds of the Lamkin San Diego Classic to finish the day in eighth place.

"It's hard to describe how difficult it is to play the greens here at San Diego Country Club," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We played some pretty good golf today at times for 36 holes but made some mistakes as well. We need to play better tomorrow if we're going to have a shot."

Peter Kuest led the Cougars with scores of 72 (E) and 70 (-2) to tie for sixth place individually. The senior recorded a team-best 2.88 par-3 scoring average and carded eight birdies on the day. Fellow senior Rhett Rasmussen finished just two strokes behind Kuest, posting a first-round 70 (-2) and a second-round 74 (+2) to tie for 16th. Rasmussen also carded eight birdies Monday along with an eagle on hole 14 of his second round.

Carson Lundell came next for BYU, tying for 31st place after shooting a 148 (+4) through two rounds of play. The sophomore posted a tournament-low 69 (-3) in the first round and a 79 (+7) in the second.

Kelton Hirsch ended the day tied for 63rd after posting scores of 80 (+8) and 71 (-1) through rounds one and two. Brock Stanger, competing as one of the team’s starting five for the first time this season, finished tied for 93rd after shooting a 156 (+12) Monday.

As a team, the Cougars posted the second-best par-4 scoring average with a 4.07 through the first two rounds. BYU will begin tomorrow’s final round just seven strokes behind current leader and WCC foe San Francisco.

Arizona State, Tennessee, Colorado State and Cal currently round out the tournament’s top-five. WCC foes Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara sit in 10th and tied for 12th places, respectively. Other WCC opponents San Diego and Loyola Marymount finished the day in 16th and 17th places.

Competing alongside 22 other golfers whose teams were participating in the Lamkin Classic, Spencer Dunaway and Cole Ponich played in the Coronado Individual on Monday. Held at Coronado Golf Course about 12 miles northwest of San Diego Country Club, Dunaway and Ponich finished tied for second and 16th places, respectively. Dunaway posted a 141 (-3) through two rounds of play while Ponich carded a 147 (+3).

Tomorrow’s third and final round of the Lamkin Classic will tee off at 8:30 a.m. PDT. Live stats and the leaderboard are available on Golfstat.com.
