INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Payton Sorenson matched his All-Time BYU record of 42.86 in the 100 freestyle at the NCAA Division I Swim and Dive Championships on Saturday.

“Payton competed well and achieved a record time,” BYU head swim coach John Brooks said. “I couldn’t be more proud of Patyon and his performance throughout this season and especially here at the NCAA.”

In the final day of the NCAA Championship, Sorenson placed 24th in the 100 freestyle and registered a time of 42.86. That ties a record time that he achieved a year ago while competing in the American Short Course Championship.

In addition to holding the BYU record in the 100 freestyle, Sorenson has the top BYU and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference time of 19.22 in the 50 freestyle. Sorenson, along with previous and current teammates Jake Taylor, Preston Jenkins and Connor Stirling, holds the BYU record in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 2:53.11.

At the MPSF Championships in February, Sorenson was awarded First-Team All-MPSF in the 50 free (19.85) and the 100 free (43.49). He was also awarded Second-Team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in the 200 freestyle relay (team time of 1:20.59) and the 400 freestyle relay (team time of 2:56.18).

Sorenson ends his junior season with two ‘Swimmer of the Week’ awards given by College Swimming and one ‘Male Athlete of the Week’ awarded by MPSF/TURBO.

Although the BYU 2016-2017 swim and dive season comes to a close, sophomore Nathan Rogers has chosen and qualified to compete in the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series. This will take place in Mesa, Arizona from April 13-15. More details will be posted as information becomes available.
