MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Senior Preston Jenkins and junior Haley Bertoldo recorded career bests in relay splits during BYU's first night of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swim and Dive Championships.

“We had a solid night with very good splits on the relays,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “Our splits were faster than they have been all year.”

Jenkins recorded a 200-yard freestyle split of 1:35.21 in the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay, earning a new personal best, increasing his No. 2 BYU All-Time Best of 1:35.40, as well as posting the fastest time in the first leg of the relay. Bertoldo earned a personal best split in the women’s 200-yard medley relay during the 50-yard backstroke leg with a split of 25.53.

The men took fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.21. Senior Preston Jenkins gave the team an early lead with his personal best split of 1:35.21. Brad Prolo took the second leg posting a split of 1:38.23, followed by David Harlan who also posted his fastest 200-yard freestyle time this year at 1:38.87. James Sorensen anchored the team with a spilt time of 1:39.94.

In the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, a team of Casey CunninghamEllie Thornbrue BrintonVanessa Moffatt and Natalie Bennion finished in fifth at 7:24.42. Cunningham led off the team with a split of 1:52.67. In the second leg, Brinton posted a split of 1:50.67, followed by Moffatt taking the third leg at a 1:51.49 split. Bennion, anchoring the team, posted the fastest split time of 1:49.59.

A team of Kumni Ogunfeibo, Levi JensenLuis Ventura and Kent Fellows took fifth in the men’s 200-yard medley relay. Ogunfeibo led off the team with a split of 22.29. Jensen and Ventura followed with split times of 24.53 and 21.29, respectively. Fellows anchored the team, earning a split of 20.27.

The women’s 200-yard medley relay team took sixth with a time of 1:43.16. Bertoldo earned her personal best time in the first leg of the 50-yard backstroke at 25.53. Alexa Walters took the second leg, posting a split of 29.43, followed by Emily To’O with a split of 25.26. Katie Smith anchored, posting a split of 22.94.

The MPSF Swimming Championships continue tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. PST, and finals at 6 p.m. PST, at East Los Angeles College. MPSF Diving Championships begin tomorrow with the 1-meter at 11 a.m. PST, at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. Live stats are available on the schedule page.
