SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- BYU swimmer Tony Puertas set a Peruvian national record on Thursday, Oct. 28 at the Puerto Rico International Swimming Open.
Puertas swam a 23.84 in the 50 meter butterfly in the first night of competition. Puertas overcame the previous record of 24.03, which was set in 2014 by Mauricio Fiol.
The competition took place at the San Juan Natatorium from Oct. 28-31. The meet was a chance for swimmers to qualify for the FINA World Short Course Championships, which will be in December.
Puertas and BYU teammate Javier Nicolas Matta both competed at the meet, fighting for the remaining two spots on Peru's team. Puertas competed in the 50, 100 and 200-meter butterfly events, while Matta swam the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter IM.
