Cougars sweep Air Force to remain undefeated

DENVER – BYU defeated regional opponent Air Force 5-0 on Friday to remain undefeated and extend the season win streak to seven. 

"Air Force is always a very spirited team and competes well, so beating them today was a good win for us," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. 

The Cougars started off strong, winning the doubles point after junior Jeremy Bourgeois and sophomore Shane Monroe won 6-4 in first doubles and senior Andrey Goryachkov and junior Jacob Sullivan recorded a 6-4 second doubles win. 

BYU carried the momentum into singles play, with Goryachkov defeating Jack McCullers to win the third singles line 6-3, 6-3. Bourgeois gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 singles spot over Luke Sanderson.

Monroe clinched the match for BYU with a victory in two sets at first singles over Air Force's Andrew Parks. Junior Keaton Cullimore added a final victory for the Cougars with a three-set win over Lucas Fumgali at the No. 2 spot.  

"We're looking forward to playing Denver tomorrow, who is a very good team and the best in our region right now," Pearce said. "I would love to see our guys come out and take it to them tomorrow and play wiht energy, poise and pride.

The Cougars stay on the road to face No. 52 Denver Saturday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. MST.
