Second Game of Doubleheader Cancelled in Fifth
ALBUQUERQUE -- BYU (24-14, 4-5) defeated New Mexico 2-1 in the first game of a double header. The second game was cancelled in the fifth inning because of darkness with the Cougars leading 5-1.
The games started late due to poor field conditions, and were delayed even further by lightening and rain.
In the first game, BYU fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. The Lobos were able to load the bases on two walks and a single. New Mexico scored when Ashley Schartzer grounded out to third base driving in Jamar Bynum who reached base on a walk.
Cougar pitcher Brooke Boyce then stiffened up forcing Robyn Huston to line out to Jodi Norton at short, ending the New Mexico threat.
The Lobos held BYU scoreless until the fourth inning. Belinda Osborn got the Cougars rolling, singling to second with one out. Paige Paramore would reach first on an error and Lauren Watson loaded the bases on a single to the left side.
With the bases loaded, Ianeta Le'i laced a single to the right side, scoring Osborn to tie the game. The Lobos threw Watson out at second base for the second out of the inning
Up next for the Cougars was Ashlyn Russell who walked to load the bases with two outs, but the Cougar rally ended when Kate Walker lined to short to end the inning.
BYU took the lead in the next inning when Debbie Dodds blasted a homerun over the left field wall. The Cougars would hold the Lobos scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn the 2-1 victory.
Boyce pitched seven innings in the win, giving up eight hits while allowing only one run, while striking out one and walking three.
BYU will return home to Gail Miller field on Tuesday April 20 to take on UVSC in a double header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
