LAS -- The BYU (6-2) softball team lost to Cal State Northridge 8-3, and then beat No. 7 Oregon State (3-2) 2-1 in extra innings at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
"Sometimes that's the way this game goes," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "After [the Northridge loss] I told them not to panic and to trust what we've worked on for so long. Basically, in the words of the Terminator 'We'll be back,' and sure enough they came back and played a great game against Oregon State."
Senior Jodi Norton drove in the game winning RBI in the top of the ninth inning against OSU with a single up the middle. Fellow senior Cortney Nix-Clark, who was on second base, scored the go-ahead run that promptly put an end to BYU's two-game losing streak. Norton, who finished two-for-four against the Beavers, said it felt great to get the big hit.
"It was awesome," Norton said. "We knew we were playing a great Oregon State team, but we weren't going to let down. I knew I had to step it up and get a big hit, and luckily, it came at a good time."
Christina Gwyn pitched a complete game on the way to grabbing her fourth win of the season. Gwyn allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five against the highly ranked opponent.
"It just shows our kids and the softball community that we're for real," Eakin said.
Northridge pulled away from the Cougars late in the fifth and sixth innings by scoring three runs in each of those innings to take a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. In the sixth, Dani Urincho scored on a Jennifer Whiteley single, and Angeline Quiocho cut the deficit to four when she crossed home off of a Monica Gonzales ground out.
BYU was unable to get any closer than that, as Amanda Pitzenberger retired four of the Cougars' last five batters. Freshman Christie Zinanti picked up the first loss of her career, allowing four earned runs in five innings and recording five strikeouts.
BYU finishes the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic with two games on Saturday. The Cougars face Cal Poly at 9 a.m. PST and Illinois at noon PST. The game against Illinois will be available via livestats.
