SACRAMENTO -- The BYU softball team (13-11) went the distance and then some, defeating Sacramento State (5-15), 5-4, in eight innings on the Hornets' home field. The Cougars then fell to Cal Poly (20-6), 2-0, in the second game of Friday's double-header.
With Jennifer Whiteley on third and one out in the top of the eighth inning, Emi Snow hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Whiteley home for the winning run. The Cougars are now 2-0 this season in games that go into extra innings.
The two teams finished the first inning tied at one apiece, and the score would remain at a standstill until the seventh inning. Senior Jodi Norton hit a one-out solo home run to break the tie. Two batters later freshman Angeline Quiocho went yard for a two-run shot, seemingly putting Sacramento State away for good.
The Hornets would answer back in the bottom of the order with three runs of their own, all of which were unearned. The comeback set the stage for Whiteley's game-winning run, and starting pitcher Christina Gwyn finished the job by putting away the side in order.
Gwyn pitched a complete game, improving her record to 8-4. Gwyn struck out five and allowed just one earned run.
Cal Poly avenged last month's 7-1 loss to BYU in Las Vegas with a 2-0 victory Friday. Freshman Christie Zinanti came out on the wrong end of this pitching duel, despite the fact she surrendered only one earned run off of five hits.
Whiteley continued her hot hitting by going a perfect 3-for-3. The senior from Houston, Texas accounted for all but one of the Cougars' hits against the Mustangs.
The Capital Classic continues Saturday with BYU taking on Mercer at 3 p.m. (PST) and Santa Clara at 5:30 p.m.
