White 8th, Cougars in 5th after day one

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Freshman Alexandra White finished in eighth place to lead the BYU women's golf team to fifth place after day one of the Jim West Challenge.

"Our second round was very good," BYU women's golf coach Carrie Roberts said. "It was a lot windier and a lot tougher, but I thought we were a lot more resilient. We just need to get off to a good start and have to play with a little more confidence."

BYU finished in fifth place in the 15-team tournament at 48-over-par with a total of 17 birdies. The Cougars were two strokes behind third-place Arkansas Little Rock. 

White finished at eight-over-par, while Annie Yang finished at 12-over-par after two rounds. Sophomore Lea Garner, who finished in second in the last tournament, tied for 25th place at 14-over-par after day one.

Selu Fotu and Maria Yacaman both finished tied in 58th place at 22-over-par. 

Individual participant Carly Oldroyd tied for 31st place at 16-over-par with four birdies on the day. 

West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga finished in first at 23-over-par, followed by Texas State trailing behind by nine strokes.
