Las Cruces, N.M.--Under windy conditions at the University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M. the BYU women's golf team shot a final round 313 to finish ninth at the Price's Give Em Five Intercollegiate.
With strong winds throughout the day, scores went up. But the Cougars were able to capitalize moving into the nineth spot after a consistent final round.
"Under the conditions, we had a pretty solid round," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "We knew we had to finish strong and I think we did just that."
Competing against five of the nation's top 25 teams, the Cougars had their strongest performance of the fall season as three Cougars finished in the top thirty individually. Junior Carrie Summerhays led the Cougars shooting 72-80-77--229 to finish in 22nd place. Summerhays, the 1999-2000 Co-MWC Player of the Year, was followed by Junior Lisa Dernick 76-74-80--230 and Adrianne Gibby 75-82-75-232. True freshman Nicole Newren also played solid in her first collegiate tournament.
"We finished this fall on a positive note," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "We're starting to build some confidence. I see us moving up this spring."
The Cougars will now take a winter break before their springs seasons starts on February 12 at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
