Iowa Hands Soccer First Loss of 2003

LEXINGTON -- The No. 12 BYU women's soccer team (4-1-1) dropped its first game of the season as the Iowa Hawkeyes (3-3-0) defeated the Cougars 3-2 in overtime at the Kentucky Invitational on Saturday.

BYU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Hawkeyes managed to reel off three unanswered goals to steel the game from the Cougars.

"We came out strong, dominated and played well," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We just struggled to put the ball in the back of the net."

BYU played aggressively on offense gaining a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks and out shooting the Hawkeyes 20-6. In the second period the Cougar defense allowed the Hawkeyes only 2 shots. However, the Hawkeyes goaltender Britta Vogele tallied 11 saves, which proved to be the difference in the game.

"Their keeper came up with some great saves," said Rockwood. "We just didn't have composure in front of the goal."

Despite out shooting the Hawkeyes 10-3 in the first period, the two teams played the majority of the period without a goal. Senior Lydia Ojuka struck first to put the Cougars up 1-0 in the 28th minute off an assist from junior Krissa Campbell and sophomore Jaime Rendich that found the far corner of the net.

Looking to increase the lead before the half, Rendich recorded her second assist of the game as she found sophomore Kimberly Martins who struck from 18 yards out into the right side of the Iowa net, giving BYU a 2-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later, the Hawkeyes came back with a goal of their own by Natalie Lencioni, sending the teams into the break with the Cougars on top 2-1.

Iowa came out strong in the second period, tying the game at 2-2 after Danielle Oswald connected on a penalty kick in the 57th minute. Neither team would score again in regulation.

In overtime, Iowa's Katelyn Quinn found the back of the Cougars' net for the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute.

The Cougars return to South Stadium next weekend for a two-game home stand with Montana on Friday, Sept. 19, and Idaho State on Saturday, Sept. 20.
